The field for this year’s Class A State Boys’ Basketball Tournament in Sioux Falls is nearly set. The majority of the top-seeded squads handled regional competition last week. The tests get tougher with SoDak 16 contests on Tuesday.

Here is a capsule look at each game involving area teams:

9 Winner (16-5) vs. 8 Groton (16-5), 7:15 p.m., Huron

As is typical in most 8-seeded vs. 9-seeded matchups, this could be a contest that goes down to the wire.

Groton, which has played in two of the past three state tournaments, heads into the game winning nine of its last 10 games, all by double digits.

Winner has won six games in a row and has solid athletes, including Nebraska football recruit Shawn Hammerbeck.

The two teams did face a common foe in Mobridge-Pollock. Both defeated the Tigers, Groton by 15 points, and Winner by three.

15 Milbank (12-10) vs. 2 Hamlin (19-2), 7:15 p.m., Watertown

There shouldn’t be any surprises in this matchup between these Northeast Conference foes.

Defending state champion Hamlin will be hard to stop. The Chargers enter the contest having won their last 14 games, all but one by double-figure margins. They also defeated Milbank by 34 points in a prior meeting.

Milbank has definitely saved its best for last. The Bulldogs, who lost five of their first six games to start the season, have gone 7-1 since that loss to Hamlin in early January. They will need a big effort in this one.

12 Mobridge-Pollock (14-8) vs. 5 Lennox (18-4), 5:30 p.m., Huron

This contest pits teams that had been trending in the opposite direction.

Lennox has won 11 consecutive games, only one by less than nine points. Meanwhile, Mobridge-Pollock had a late-season four-game losing streak, but rebounded in time get to the SoDak 16, including avenging a recent setback to Stanley County in the region semifinals.

The two squads shared a common opponent in Groton. Lennox won their contest by eight points at Groton, while Mobridge-Pollock lost in the battle of Tigers at home by 15 points.

11 St. Francis (16-6) vs. 6 Clark-Willow Lake (17-4) 6 p.m., Miller

While the records of these two squads are nearly identical, that’s where the similarities stop.

Clark-Willow Lake played a solid schedule that included six teams who are currently playing in either the Class A or Class B SoDak 16 this week. Of the Cyclones’ four losses this year, three came to top-rated Class A Sioux Falls Christian, second-rated Class A Hamlin, and second-rated Class B Castlewood. The other was in the closing seconds to Groton.

St. Francis started out the year by winning three out of four games at the prestigious Lakota Nation Invitational. The Warriors avenged a pair of regular-season setbacks to Pine Ridge by winning the third encounter by a single point in the region semifinal.
