RAPID CITY – Aberdeen Central blanked Spearfish in a dual to start the day, and then picked up a huge doubles win to end the day during the Rapid City Invitational tennis tournament on Friday.
While the Golden Eagles won every match against Spearfish, the highlight of the day according to Central coach Trent Kurtz occurred at flight two doubles where Dawson Pederson and Mason Ligon handled a foe that Central lost to earlier this season.
“We got a huge win right at the end of the day out of two dubs,” Kurtz said. “They played unbelievable. …They beat Brandon Valley who got us last time. It was a very good win.”
Kurtz said the Central tandem played as well as they have all year during the 10-5 victory in the semifinals over the Lynx doubles team.
“They’re a really good team,” Kurtz said, “and we kind of controlled the match and played extremely well.”
The victory not only moved the Central duo into the championship match this morning, it will pay dividends later in the season as well.
“Wins like that are really good with seed points,” Kurtz said. “It was a really good win. They played great.”
The top flight doubles team of AJ Prehn and Gustavo Carrara, and the third flight doubles team of Aric Tennant and Mika Dannen each won and lost a match and will play for third.
“Doubles have been our strength all year,” Kurtz said, “and another good night.”
The singles portion of the tourney will take place after the doubles conclude today.
