HARRISBURG – Aberdeen Central scored three goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to break a tie score en route to 4-2 Eastern South Dakota Conference girls’ soccer win over Harrisburg Saturday morning.
After battling to an even first half, the Golden Eagles came out on a mission to start the second half.
“We talked at halftime that the first 10 minutes of the second we half we just to need to come out and everybody has to move, we have to press them hard, and we hadn’t really got the ball out to our wings very much in the first half,” said Central coach Merle Aske.
The squad took those words to heart as Morgan Fiedler scored two goals on two assists from Deshani Peters in the first two minutes after intermission.
“The first time down the field, Deshani got it out to Morgan and she just hit a rocket,” Aske said. “The next time down it was basically the same thing only Morgan was in closer and Deshani found her, put the ball right to her foot in front of the goal and she put that one in, too.”
Just seven minutes later, it was Peters who found the back of net on an assist from Taryn Hettich.
“That’s about good as good of a start to a half as you can have,” Aske said. “We just have to figure out a way maybe to do that the first half.”
Peters scored the first goal of the game before Harrisburg answered back on a corner kick about a minute later.
The Eagles improved to 7-1 on the season and will host Sioux Falls Roosevelt on Saturday at Swisher Field.
Aske was pleased how his team responded in its first outing since suffering its only setback of the season.
“The kids played really well today. We bounced back from our game last week,” Aske said. “They were all very disappointed. They really understand what we have to do now.”
