Aberdeen Roncalli claimed wins at the top of singles and doubles, but St. Thomas More swept everything else on the way to a 7-2 tennis victory in the matchup of Cavaliers at the Holgate Courts Monday morning.
Hallie Haskell had a big day winning both her singles and doubles match to account for Roncalli’s points.
The senior scored a 10-4 victory at number one singles.
“She has found her groove for sure and it is very fun and exciting to watch her,” said Roncalli coach Hallie Rohrbach. “It’s fun to coach a player with so many options and so much skill.”
Haskell started out her day by teaming with Maria Barnett to grab a win at number one doubles. The tandem was locked in a tight match before pulling away for a 10-4 victory.
Haskell and Barnett were able to win crucial deuce points to help secure the win.
“Last season and the beginning of this season we struggled under pressure of certain situations like deuce. We have spent a lot of time and energy discussing mental toughness and maturation of the girls’s game, particularly in light of pressure situations and points like deuce,” Rohrbach said. “So seeing the girls pull off not one, but multiple deuce wins today was a huge feat both for today toward their win, our team goals and toward their own personal goals as well.”
Roncalli will be right back at it today playing in Brookings. The squad will then host Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens on Friday before competing in the Elliott Extravaganza on Saturday.
