YANKTON – Aberdeen Central recorded its third straight shutout with a 1-0 girls’ soccer win over Yankton in Eastern South Dakota Conference action on Saturday.

The second-rated Golden Eagles improved to 10-1 on the season with the victory. Of Central’s 10 wins this season, seven have come by shutout.

Central thwarted the Bucks defense designed to slow down the Eagles offensive attack.

“They just basically parked the bus and tried to keep us from getting good looks. We had to adjust a little bit,” said Central coach Merle Aske. “We had some good looks. Their goalie made a couple of really good saves. When they have 6 to 10 players behind the ball at all times, it’s just kind of tough to find that seam and get that really good look. They girls didn’t get frustrated. They kept plugging away and kept shooting.”

The Eagles eventually found a way to get one past the bus five minutes into the second half when Ivy Schanzenbach delivered on about a 25-yard blast for the only goal of the contest.

“We moved the ball around. They tried to clear the ball. They cleared it to Ivy,” Aske said. “She took a touch and then just hit it and it went in. When a team is playing like that, that’s what you need. You need to find a goal. Once we got the goal we kept a lot of pressure on them.”

Central finished with 45 shots compared to just 11 by Yankton. While the Gazelles weren’t able to get off any high-percentage attempts, Aske said there wasn’t any room for error with just a one-goal lead.

“They got a couple of shots off, but nothing too dangerous,” Aske said, “but when you’re only leading 1-0 any shot that goes in ties the game.”

The Eagles conclude their regular season by hosting Mitchell at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Swisher Field.

“We have to get back to the drawing board on Monday and figure out how we’re going to do things,” Aske said. “I know they have one player that scores almost all their goals. We’ll have to keep our eye on her a little bit.”
