HURON – Aberdeen Central’s Laney Gonsor won a singles championship and the Golden Eagles finished fourth as a team during the Eastern South Dakota Conference Tennis Tournament Tuesday in Huron.

The Eagles finished one point ahead of Watertown for fourth place. Mitchell won the tourney by a comfortable margin with Yankton second and Harrisburg third.

“Our goal going into ESD was top four,” said Central coach John Vogel, “and we got it by the skin of our teeth.”

The Eagles started out the day on a strong note in singles getting four of their six players into the semifinals.

Gonsor won all three of her matches to win the title at fifth flight singles, while Emily Ringgenberg finished second at first flight singles.

“Avery Tennant also earned all-conference by her third place finish in flight six,” Vogel said.

The doubles action featured some close matches.

Ringgenberg and Alice Vogel finished fifth at flight one, Carly Comstock and Livia Douglas were fourth at flight two, and Gonsor and Charlee Galvin took third at flight three.

“Ones really struggled with the windy conditions and never showed up against Mitchell. Then they won two consolation matches, both in tiebreakers,” Vogel said. “Twos won their first, then lost to Mitchell, then lost a close one to Watertown in the third place match.”

The third place match was a battle at third flight doubles, before Gonsor and Galvin finally prevailed.

“Threes beat Pierre in the first round,” Vogel said, noting that Pierre won a previous matchup pretty handily at the Elliott Extravaganza. “Then they lost to Mitchell, but they came back to win third against Watertown. They were up 7-1, but needed a breaker to win it.”

The Golden Eagles will now have a week to gear up for the Class AA State Tournament next Thursday and Friday in Sioux Falls.
