The Aberdeen Central girls’ soccer team concluded its regular season in the same way it played throughout much of the year with a convincing win over Mitchell.

The Golden Eagles blitzed the visitors with three goals in six minutes to break open a tight game on the way to a 6-2 Eastern South Dakota Conference victory Tuesday afernoon at Swisher Field.

The wind played a key role in the contest.

Central had the wind at its back in the opening 40 minutes. The Eagles led 1-0 on a goal by Deshani Peters before the flood gates opened. Jayda Hammer scored in the 32nd minute from a difficult angle. Central then scored on back-to-back corner kicks in the 37th minute and 38th minute. Morgan Fielder scored on a header off a corner from Allie Morgan and then Peters wrapped a corner kick around the post for a picture perfect goal.

“Even with the wind, that plays so much different with the ball when the crosses are being pushed the wrong way and we’re not getting the ball exactly where we want it. The girls did a good job of just keeping the pressure on them,” said Central coach Merle Aske. “We knew it was going to be tough for them to get out. The goals we scored were when we had a lot of movement off the ball. That’s what we’re going to have to do as we get into the playoffs.”

Central added two mores goal in the second half as Peters had her third goal and then assisted on Fiedler’s second goal.

The wind played a role in Mitchell’s goals in the second half when the Kernels possessed the strong breeze out of the south.

“It is really tricky,” said Central goal keeper Paige Burilovich of trying to figure out the conditions. “On a field like this where it’s completely open it can be really hard some games, but you just have to stay in your line as much as you can.”

The Eagles could have had many more goals, but were denied by a pair of Mitchell goalies. Central had 23 shots on goal compared to just six for the visitors.

“We had a lot of chances,” Aske said. “In soccer you have to create a lot of opportunities in order to get those goals that you need.”

The contest marked the final regular-season home game for a group of Central seniors, including Burilovich.

“Honestly, it’s crazy,” Burilovich said. “I still feel like I could be a freshman on the field. Hopefully, we go far in the playoffs.”

The Eagles will host a playoff game on Tuesday against an opponent to be determined.

Central ended up 11-1 during the regular season, its lone setback a 1-0 loss to Brandon Valley.

“It was a good regular season. We had opportunities in every game. We’re always going to point back to the Brandon game, the one we didn’t play very well,” Aske said. “That’s kind of the way it is with high school kids. You’re not going to be on top of your game every day. You have to be able to fight through things. We did a good job this year with games that were close and games that were tight.”
