SIOUX FALLS – The Aberdeen Roncalli Cavaliers closed their season with a flurry during the final day of competition at the Class A State Tennis Tournament in Sioux Falls.

Roncalli won all four of its matches on the day to grab two consolation championships and a fifth place spot on the way to moving up one position in the team points. The Cavaliers finished eighth with 104 points. Mitchell won the team title.

“I was very proud of our girls’ performance today,” said Roncalli coach Hallie Rohrbach. “It felt more ourselves than (Monday) and that’s the best way to end any tournament is feeling like you played ‘your game’ well.”

Hallie Haskell won the consolation championship at top flight singles, Katherine Kretchman and Eva Madsen were consolation champs at flight three doubles, and Haskell and Maria Barnett won a pair of matches to finish fifth at top flight doubles.

Haskell doubled up her opponent 10-5 to win her consolation title.

“She was extremely focused, played hard and had a great match all-around, the best you can ask to wrap up an incredible singles career,” Rohrbach said.

Unlike Monday’s first day of action when Roncalli lost a handful of close matches including four in super-tiebreakers, the Cavaliers found a way to win the tight matches during the final day.

Haskell and Barnett defeated a team from St. Thomas More 10-9, while Kretchman and Madsen edged a team from Sioux Falls Christian by the same 10-9 margin.

“Our number three doubles pulled off an exciting win over Sioux Falls Christian in a tiebreaker,” Rohrbach said. “Each game they made the necessary adjustments for the next game and played aggressive and consistent to win the tiebreak.”

Rohrbach said the number one doubles team overcame a slow start to prevail in its tiebreaker.

“The girls found their rhythm and we’re able to take the lead and keep it early to finish it off in the tiebreak,” Rohrbach said.

In the end, it was a perfect end to the season for the Cavaliers.

“I am very proud of our wins and the solid tennis we played today, but I am also so proud of this amazing group of young women,” Rohrbach said. “They worked so hard to this season and overcame many obstacles and persevered through many trials to get to where they played today.”
